The First Inaugural GLAP Training and FLS Testing at GSI-Kyabirwa Surgical Center

Salaama N.

Instructors and trainees celebrate the successful completion of the GLAP Training and FLS Testing at Kyabirwa Surgical Center. This moment captures the collaboration and dedication that made this inaugural training program a resounding success.

Kyabirwa Surgical Center (KSC) proudly hosted the first-ever Global Laparoscopic Advanced Program (GLAP) Training and Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) Testing from October 28th to November 6th, 2024.

This landmark event, the very first training to take place following the launch of KSC's state-of-the-art Simulation Lab, marks a pivotal milestone in advancing laparoscopic surgical education in Uganda and East Africa.

A New Era in Surgical Training

With the launch of KSC's Simulation Lab earlier in 2024, the center has positioned itself as a leader in cutting-edge medical education. The GLAP Training program provided both theoretical instruction and hands-on practice, equipping healthcare professionals with the skills necessary to excel in laparoscopic surgery. The training was followed by the FLS Testing, where 16 participants successfully completed both the written and manual components of the rigorous test.

Highlights of the Training Program

  • Day 1: Introduction and Setup

The training commenced with an overview led by Dr. Linda and Dr. Joseph, who introduced the program and its objectives. This was followed by a detailed orientation of the SAGES Facility and a meet-and-greet with the expert faculty, including Dr. Marcela, Dr. Nichole, Dr. Damoi, and Dr. Moses.

  • Hands-On Simulation and Lectures

Participants were divided into two tracks, allowing for a blend of lecture-based learning and practical experience. The Simulation Lab played a central role, with trainees practicing using advanced simulation equipment like FLS boxes, HOP boxes, and J and J Task Trainers.

  • Expert Faculty Instruction

Led by a team of experienced instructors, including Dr. Linda, Dr. Marcela, Dr. Damoi, and others, the program included in-depth lectures, followed by simulation practice. The practical sessions allowed trainees to refine their laparoscopic techniques in a hands-on, controlled environment.

Key Program Highlights and Accomplishments

The GLAP Training and FLS Testing program at KSC proved to be a resounding success, achieving several key milestones:

  1. Successful Administration of FLS Testing: Over the course of three days, 16 trainees successfully completed both the written and manual components of the FLS test. This rigorous assessment is a cornerstone of the program, measuring the trainees' mastery of laparoscopic hands-on skills.

  2. Cross-Department Collaboration: The smooth execution of the event was made possible through seamless collaboration between the operations, welfare, IT, and clinical support teams. Their coordinated efforts ensured that every aspect of the training, from equipment setup to logistics, ran efficiently.

  3. Hands-on Training with Advanced Simulation Tools: Trainees had the opportunity to practice using cutting-edge equipment, including the Lap Mentor and FLS boxes. These tools allowed for realistic simulation of laparoscopic procedures, enabling participants to refine their skills in a controlled, safe environment.

  4. Positive Trainee Feedback: Many participants expressed their appreciation for the well-organized structure of the program, the quality of the instructors, and the hands-on nature of the training. Trainees noted that the blend of lecture-based learning and simulation practice was crucial in enhancing their understanding of laparoscopic surgery.

  5. Effective Communication and Organization: The creation of a dedicated WhatsApp group helped to streamline communication, ensuring that real-time updates and issue resolution were handled quickly and efficiently. The careful planning of schedules and resources further contributed to the event’s success.

    Acknowledgments and special thanks:

The success of the GLAP Training and FLS Testing would not have been possible without the dedication and expertise of various individuals and teams:

  • Ms. Anna Turumanya Kalumuna, Director: For overseeing the event's organization and ensuring all preparations were in place.

  • Dr. Linda: For leading the program and providing expert guidance.

  • Dr. Damoi: For mentoring the trainees and spearheading the FLS testing process.

  • Dr. Marcela and JQ: For their support during the simulation setup and training.

  • Support Teams: From IT to maintenance and welfare, all teams played a vital role in ensuring smooth operations.

Looking Ahead: Building the Future of Laparoscopic Surgery

The inaugural GLAP Training and FLS Testing at Kyabirwa Surgical Center have set a new standard in laparoscopic hands-on surgical skills training in East Africa. With the Simulation Lab at the forefront of this initiative, KSC is poised to continue its mission of fostering surgical excellence through innovative training programs. The success of this program highlights the center’s commitment to advancing medical education and improving surgical outcomes.
