The Global Laparoscopic Advancement Program (GLAP) aims to expand access to laparoscopic surgery training worldwide, with a mission to make this advanced surgical practice available in regions where it is limited or nonexistent. In an exciting first for Uganda, Kyabirwa Surgical Center recently hosted a transformative, large-scale GLAP course from October 28th to November 1st, 2024. This intensive, onsite training marked a milestone as the country’s largest laparoscopic training event, welcoming 16 eager surgeons and surgical trainees who were guided by six experienced faculty members.
The course was a culmination of five months of rigorous online learning, followed by immersive, hands-on coaching tailored to each participant. Designed by the Global Affairs Committee of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), this program introduced Uganda’s healthcare professionals to the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Skills – a first for the nation’s healthcare system. This training is expected to reshape Uganda’s surgical landscape, bringing the benefits of minimally invasive surgery to more patients, including quicker recovery times and reduced postoperative complications.
The event attracted high-level delegates, including representatives from Uganda’s Ministry of Health, the President of the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa (COSECSA), SAGES members, and local political leaders. Their presence underscored the national and international support for GLAP's mission and the commitment to improving surgical care across the country.
Through this collaboration, Kyabirwa Surgical Center has taken a pivotal step in elevating Uganda’s surgical capabilities. With each trained surgeon, we move closer to a future where advanced, safe, and accessible surgical care is within reach for all. Join us as we celebrate this historic achievement, share stories from our participating surgeons, and continue shaping the future of healthcare in Uganda, one surgeon at a time.
